A health talk on "Dry Eye Disease" was held on Wednesday, 10-October-2007 at JJ Lions Dialysis Centre in collaboration with two other
Lions Clubs, namely Johor Jaya and Masai together with Allergan Malaysia.
The speaker was Dr. Ling Heng Chuan, Consultant Eye Surgeon from Ling Eye Specialist Clinic & Surgery of Wisma Maria.
Allergan Malaysia which was represented by Ms Linda Lim, Product Specialist, donated door gifts to all participants of the talk. The door
gifts were packed into paper bags containing Allergan Eye Care literature, tissue paper, souvenir pen and Allergan Refresh Tears
eyedrops.
Crowd started to pour in right from 7.30 pm and this talk had attracted about 66 people, comprising of 39 Lions and 27 guests. Clinical
Assistants from Dr Ling's clinic were very busy conducting the Schirmer Test on most of the participants. The Schirmer Test is to
determine the degree of dryness of both the eyes of the participants:
Normal : >15mm
Suspicious : 10 - 15mm
Mild : 6 - 10mm
Moderate : 3 - 6mm
Severe : 0 - 3mm
Most of the participants did not realize that they had dry eyes disease until they did the Schirmer Test. Dry eye diseases can be treated very
easily by applying the appropriate eyedrop.
After most of the participants had their eyes tested, Dr Ling went on with his talk. The talk had created some excitement among the crowd
as the majority could understand very well what Dr Ling had presented because he used the layman approach in explaining the various
causes of Dry Eye Disease and also taught us on how to prevent it.
The talk took only about 20 minutes and at the end of the talk, there was a question & answer session. Some participants asked about
their related eye problems rather than on the main topic of "Dry Eye Disease" and Dr Ling unselfishly answered all those questions.
The meeting ended at about 9.00 pm with the presentation of momentos. President Lion Liza Lau of Lions Club of Taman Pelangi Indah
presented a momento to Dr Ling while President Ng Yok Lim of Lions Club of Masai presented a momento to Ms. Linda Lim of Allergan
Malaysia.
Tidbits and drinks were treated to everyone before they dispersed.
